Overview
Pet owners use Vello to manage records, prescriptions and bookings. Veterinary practices configure the service to match their workflows. I worked across the product’s frontend, services and infrastructure.
The product
Vello connects veterinary practices with pet owners. Owners use it to check health records, view prescriptions, book appointments and receive care reminders. Practices configure the service around their own workflows.
I joined two years into development. The team already had an established codebase and ways of working, so my first job was to understand the decisions behind them.
My contribution
I contributed across the features the team shipped. Some I developed independently from start to finish. Others I built with the wider team.
The work moved between the React frontend, backend services in NestJS and Go, and AWS infrastructure, including Lambda and DynamoDB. I worked across those boundaries rather than handing each part to a separate specialist.
Working in an existing system
Before extending an unfamiliar part of the product, I read the surrounding code and asked why it worked that way. That context helped me follow the existing patterns and identify changes that could affect another part of the system.
The useful result is straightforward: a pet owner can check a vaccination record or book a follow-up without calling the clinic. The engineering needs to support that everyday task.
